Essay for marking

I believe that Julius Caesar and Brutus are similar in quite a lot of simple and ways, here is my reasoning for my statement. Quotes from the text to show that Julius Caesar is hubris are ” My senate.” “He is a dreamer, leave him.” The way julius Caesar says my senate is very bold as he does not have any possession of the senate what so ever, this is one of his many acts of hubris. If he was alive today it would be the equivalent of him being a HOY at a school and saying to the headteacher, ” I run things around here!” Bearing in mind that he is not King at the moment, it is basically a dinner lady saying “SHUT UP!” to the headmaster.

CAESAR

Such men as he be never at heart’s ease
Whiles they behold a greater than themselves,
And therefore are they very dangerous.
I rather tell thee what is to be feared
Than what I fear; for always I am Caesar. (1.2.218-222)

Caesar is not put off by his own arrogannce. He doesn’t see his condescending personality as rude; instead it’s a aspect of him he has achieved by proving himself a powerful and superior man, even if that means that he had has to stomp on other people to get there. This is called hubris. Some people could also say that Julias Caesar got punished with nemesis. Nemesis is when you are struck down by the gods above for showing to much ambition. Caesar is a headmaster in a nursery. The way that he looks down on their people because they are smaller than him. To put it simply, Caesar is a big fish in a little pond.

the ” he is a dreamer” quote is important as it again shows an act of hubris. By this Shakespeare is trying to get across to the audience that Caesar is showing on the outside he is all confident, however he is actually scared on the inside. This is why he says to the audience “let us leave him” and then starts laughing while he says it. It is like when you are getting roasted by all your friends in a group chat on what’s app, you laugh it off on Monday to hide your inner pain. Also the way that the soothsayer is portayed in black and Caesar is portrayed in white makes the audience think that Caesar is the good guy, and that the soothsayer is the bad guy, whereas some people could say it is the other way round. However, althpugh the Caesar is ambitious and is some cases bad he did some good things. He was an exceptional military leader and was a great, brave fighter in the war zone. He also led by example by killing loads of people and he always backed his soldiers. What I am trying to get across as although he was arrogant, he would of done ok for Rome.

CAESAR
Caesar shall forth. The things that threatened me
Ne’er looked but on my back. When they shall see
The face of Caesar, they are vanished. (2.2.10-12)

Quote taken from= http://www.shmoop.com/julius-caesar/pride-quotes-2.html

This means that Caesar is surprisingly arrogant. I think as well in this that he is trying to say that the things that scare him do not scare him anymore, and that they are things of the past. Also I think that Caesar when people see him that they will vanish. I am not sure that this theory is true but in the quote it does say “Ne’er looked but on my back. When they shall see. The face of Caesar, they are vanished.

A reason why they contrast each other is because “Brutus is a noble man”, and Caesar is an arrogant and ambitious man. Brutus said he slayed Caesar for the greater good of Rome as he was ambitious. He was basically saying in theoretical terms that he was trying to get to the top of everyone and be a dominant alpha male, and brutus stuck him down with the punishment of nemesis. He also steps on top of other people like their a step on a step ladder. Although Julias Caesar did help Rome win wars and get stuff that was a front and was not who he really was. A common mistake that some people make is that they think that Julias Caesar was King which is untrue, he was about to be elected King, but Brutus slayed him. Another reason why Julias Caesar and Marcus Brutus completely contrast each other is because one of them are loyal, and the other one isn’t. Brutus slayed his best friend and betrayed him. Although Caesar was ambitious he was going to give his best friend Brutus power, and quite a lot of money. This in some ways shows that he Caesar would have been a much much better leader than ” honourable ” Brutus. If Caesar acted like he did to Brutus then he probably could have been a great leader. A reason to go back on my own point is that Brutus talked to his slave politely and called him by his first name, and most importantly gave him respect. Whereas Caesar on the other hand called his slave “slave” and treated him like dirt, with no respect.

In the last paragraph I didn’t get to explain the ” he is a dreamer” quote. By this Shakespeare is trying to get across to the audience that Caesar is showing on the outside he is all confident, but he is actually scared on the inside. This is why he says to the audience “let us leave him” and then starts laughing while he says it. On my second paragraph I am going to be explaining the quote

CAESAR
Caesar shall forth. The things that threatened me
Ne’er looked but on my back. When they shall see
The face of Caesar, they are vanished. (2.2.10-12)

I got this quote from the website http://www.shmoop.com/julius-caesar/pride-quotes-2.html

this means that Julias Caesar is surprisingly arrogant. I think as well in this that he is trying to say that the things that scare him do not scare him anymore, and that they are things of the past. Rewritten introduction

I believe that Julius Caesar and Brutus are similar in quite a lot of simple and hubris ways, here is my reasoning for my statement. Quotes from the text to show that Julius Caesar is hubris are ” My senate.” “He is a dreamer, leave him.” I am going to go through these quotes one by one and explain them thoroughly. The way julius Caesar says my senate is very bold as he does not have any possession of the senate what so ever. If he was about today it would like him being a HOY at a school and saying to the headteacher, ” I run things around here!” Bearing in mind that he is not King at the moment he is saying this so in theoretical terms it is basically a dinner lady saying it to a headmaster.

Final and changed essay question

I do believe that Brutus and julius Caesar are quite similar, here are my reasons why.

To start off I think they both show acts of hubris in their behaviour. One hubris quote from Caesar was that ” the idea of March are come.” This means that it has reached the middle of March and nothing has happened to him. The soothsayer said that something would happen to him but because it hasn’t happened straight away he thinks that he was safe. He was quite mistaken. Another quote that Julia’s Caesar said was ” my senate.” This means that he has possession of the senate. In the play the character that is meant to be playing julius Caesar would have to put an emphasis on the word ” my ” to get the point across that he runs things and that he owns the senate. The last quote for his para graph is ” he is a dreamer, let us leave him.” This means that he thinks the soothsayer   Is lying about the idea of March. He thinks that he is talking rubbish and malarchy. He did not believe him when he said ” beware the idea of March.” He should have beloved him when he told him to be careful.

Introduction + 1st para

Introduction

I believe Cassius does think to much like Brutus says, these are my reasons why I think this. First of all towards the end of the play when Brutus and Cassius are battling in a play against another army, they are losing and Cassius immediately thinks that they are going to lose so then he instantly kill himself. It turns out that they were then winning and when soldiers came to tell him the good news they found out he was dead. This suggests that Cassius jumps to conclusions way to quickly, and if he had just held out and have waited a little bit he could have still been alive and could have been breathing. He could have then gone back to Rome and taken what of his. The crown. Also he could have talked some tactics with Brutus and his army. This could have then resulted in them winning the war and winning back over the people of Rome. This could have then ment that they could have gone back to Rome as triumphant and noble men. This could have also gone and got their dignity back , but Cassius like I said earlier thinks to quickly. Cassius also over thinks I j the ways that he speaks to himself and other people. Unfortunately I haven’t got any evidence in the text to support this but it’s like if someone was to scheme a plan, Cassius would always think of the negatives, never ever the positives. Also he says things to quickly as well he doesn’t think what he is about to say.

My opinion on “The Wanderer”

I think that the wanderer is a really powerful piece which totally engages the person looking at it. The person standing with his back to us is ginger which could suggest that he is Scottish. The Scottish were descendent of the celts and the celts used to love a fight. This could mean that the man could be ready to fight someone in the way that he is stood there. He also has a walking stick it looks like in his hand which could mean that he was crippled if he was fighting maybe. He is also standing on a rock. It is quite a weird rock in the way that it is shaped, and the man is leaning to one side as it is slanted. He is standing on it with one leg higher than the other one. The one that is higher than the other one could be held there in triumph, as if it was stronger or something. Moreover there is a very weird mountain that is in the back of the picture. The mountain has got some clouds on top of it. This shows just how tall the actual mountain is or how low the clouds are. In the picture as well the is either a really quick gust of wind going on, or that there is a really rapid mini waterfall going on. The way that the artist has drawn that is really cool and very fascinating in the way it looks. If it was a water fall it would work with the picture very well in real life as it is an iconic image in most movies when someone is about to take on the whole world, they are standing in a really cool setting, background or place. The tone of the picture is really well drawn aswell as the artist has moved the brush in the same direction every time. Caspar David Friedrich made this painting with strokes of a brush in 1818. He goes from the bottom left up to the top right of you look closely. The  painting is a oil-on-canvas one. However he could have done it with water colour.
