I believe that Julius Caesar and Brutus are similar in quite a lot of simple and ways, here is my reasoning for my statement. Quotes from the text to show that Julius Caesar is hubris are ” My senate.” “He is a dreamer, leave him.” The way julius Caesar says my senate is very bold as he does not have any possession of the senate what so ever, this is one of his many acts of hubris. If he was alive today it would be the equivalent of him being a HOY at a school and saying to the headteacher, ” I run things around here!” Bearing in mind that he is not King at the moment, it is basically a dinner lady saying “SHUT UP!” to the headmaster.

CAESAR

Such men as he be never at heart’s ease
Whiles they behold a greater than themselves,
And therefore are they very dangerous.
I rather tell thee what is to be feared
Than what I fear; for always I am Caesar. (1.2.218-222)

Caesar is not put off by his own arrogannce. He doesn’t see his condescending personality as rude; instead it’s a aspect of him he has achieved by proving himself a powerful and superior man, even if that means that he had has to stomp on other people to get there. This is called hubris. Some people could also say that Julias Caesar got punished with nemesis. Nemesis is when you are struck down by the gods above for showing to much ambition. Caesar is a headmaster in a nursery. The way that he looks down on their people because they are smaller than him. To put it simply, Caesar is a big fish in a little pond.

the ” he is a dreamer” quote is important as it again shows an act of hubris. By this Shakespeare is trying to get across to the audience that Caesar is showing on the outside he is all confident, however he is actually scared on the inside. This is why he says to the audience “let us leave him” and then starts laughing while he says it. It is like when you are getting roasted by all your friends in a group chat on what’s app, you laugh it off on Monday to hide your inner pain. Also the way that the soothsayer is portayed in black and Caesar is portrayed in white makes the audience think that Caesar is the good guy, and that the soothsayer is the bad guy, whereas some people could say it is the other way round. However, althpugh the Caesar is ambitious and is some cases bad he did some good things. He was an exceptional military leader and was a great, brave fighter in the war zone. He also led by example by killing loads of people and he always backed his soldiers. What I am trying to get across as although he was arrogant, he would of done ok for Rome.

CAESAR
Caesar shall forth. The things that threatened me
Ne’er looked but on my back. When they shall see
The face of Caesar, they are vanished. (2.2.10-12)

This means that Caesar is surprisingly arrogant. I think as well in this that he is trying to say that the things that scare him do not scare him anymore, and that they are things of the past. Also I think that Caesar when people see him that they will vanish. I am not sure that this theory is true but in the quote it does say “Ne’er looked but on my back. When they shall see. The face of Caesar, they are vanished.

A reason why they contrast each other is because “Brutus is a noble man”, and Caesar is an arrogant and ambitious man. Brutus said he slayed Caesar for the greater good of Rome as he was ambitious. He was basically saying in theoretical terms that he was trying to get to the top of everyone and be a dominant alpha male, and brutus stuck him down with the punishment of nemesis. He also steps on top of other people like their a step on a step ladder. Although Julias Caesar did help Rome win wars and get stuff that was a front and was not who he really was. A common mistake that some people make is that they think that Julias Caesar was King which is untrue, he was about to be elected King, but Brutus slayed him. Another reason why Julias Caesar and Marcus Brutus completely contrast each other is because one of them are loyal, and the other one isn’t. Brutus slayed his best friend and betrayed him. Although Caesar was ambitious he was going to give his best friend Brutus power, and quite a lot of money. This in some ways shows that he Caesar would have been a much much better leader than ” honourable ” Brutus. If Caesar acted like he did to Brutus then he probably could have been a great leader. A reason to go back on my own point is that Brutus talked to his slave politely and called him by his first name, and most importantly gave him respect. Whereas Caesar on the other hand called his slave “slave” and treated him like dirt, with no respect.
